Budget Backpacking Gear List
$1,000 Budget (14 lb Base Weight)
Are you just starting out backpacking and don’t want to spend thousands of dollars on high-end gear right out of the gate? This budget backpacking gear list will get you on the trail for under $1,000. It can be used for everything from overnighters to a thru-hiking in typical three-season conditions (late Spring through early Fall.) And, with a 14 lb base-weight, it’s pretty lightweight too.
The Big Three (Backpack, Shelter, Sleep System)
Weight: 9.4 lbs, Cost: $538
These “big three” items make up the foundation of your lightweight backpacking system. They get used more than anything else, make up the bulk of your pack weight and will take the biggest chunk out of your budget.

Clothing Worn
Weight: 2.9 lbs, Cost: $173
